The fort was equipped with a set of modern guns back in 1885 and we are looking into the mechanics of the Rifled Muzzle Loaders of the day; often ex naval guns of 9 to 10inch calibre. The Fort is typical of its type but no less fascinating; it saw great change from the early 1800's to the second world war and was pronounced redundant to further defensive needs in 1956 with the invention of the guided missile and the atomic bomb.
The research we are doing will cover all the aspects of the port of Newhaven as a defensive hub for the south coast. It has it all from Radar stations, coastal guns to star fish sites and even a secret underground HQ called HMS Forward.
More will follow on our new page starting in the new year.
