In the planning is a much anticipated visit to the Fan Bay Deep Shelter now run by the National Trust. This is the former deep shelter for the crews of the Fan Bay Battery located on the top of White Cliffs just east of Dover. The battery was armed with three 6 inch guns during the war and adopted the role of a "Flash Battery"; this was a clever ruse and only fired blank or flash charges at German vessels that strayed too close to shore. The idea of this was to force enemy vessels to withdraw further out to sea thereby coming within range of the bigger coastal guns positioned further inland. Just how successful this was is not yet known but will no doubt provide material for further research. More information follows in the coming weeks.
